Relying on unnamed sources, Jon Stokes at Ars Technica is asserting that the Apple's new A4 system-on-a-chip is based on a stripped-down Cortex A8 CPU, and not the faster A9 that some have been speculating about. The iPhone 3GS and iPod touch are based on the A8, though underclocked to 600 MHz to save power. The CPU on the A4 SoC is believed to run at 1 GHz clock speed.
When the A4 was announced along with the iPad in January, many observers theorized that the CPU would be a wholly new design that Apple would have developed in-house with the talent from their acquisition of chipmaker P.A. Semi. After the device's specs were revealed, however, it seemed more likely that the CPU was a dual core Cortex-A9 with advanced power-management technology to achieve the 10-hour battery life that Apple claimed.
According to Stokes's sources, though, Apple was able to run the A8 chip up to 1 GHz and still save power because I/O demands were limited. "With one 30-pin connector on the bottom and no integrated camera of any kind," Stokes writes, "the A4 needs a lot less in the way of I/O support than comparable chips... It's lean and mean to a degree that isn't possible with an off-the-shelf SoC." If this supposition proves correct, it could explain why Apple decided to ship the iPad - at least in its initial version - without a camera. lack of a camera has frequently been mentioned as a disappointment by many observers. The lack of camera support in the hardware allowed Apple to improve performance, Stokes theorizes, suggesting that "Apple has probably ditched some dedicated image processing blocks."
P.A. Semi's role in the development of the A4 chip may have been limited to power management, Stokes thinks. Noting that the new hires had a little time between when P.A. Semi was acquired in April 2008 and the release of the iPad in January 2010, Stokes suggests they brought their "power-gating" expertise from the development of the PWRficient chipset, which was based on two 2GHz superscalar PowerPC cores running at 2 GHz and had a draw of as little as 5 watts. Power gating requires shutting down the parts of a chip that aren't in use, which is difficult to do on high-speed chips. Killing most of the I/O and image processing blocks would have allowed Apple to squeeze a lot more speed out of the A8.
A separate story onVentureBeat early last month also asserted that the P.A. Semi team didn't work on the A4, but rather the VLSI team that had been developing Apple's custom silicon going back to the northbridges on the G4 and G5. Ars's Stokes joins other observers in speculating that the A4 may power a future iPhone release.
Everybody hears rumors, but the guys who manage other people's money have more to gain by getting things right, and much, much more to lose when they get things wrong. A blogger can always say "hey, ya win some, ya lose some," but a financial analyst can lose his or her job. So when someone like Peter Misek, an analyst at Canaccord Adams, says he has heard rumblings that production problems may delay the iPad, it's worth hearing out.
In a research note this morning reported by the Wall Street Journal's Digital Daily blogger John Paczkowski, he told his clients he had "heard that the upcoming iPad launch may be somewhat limited as a manufacturing bottleneck has impacted production of Apple’s newest device." Without specifying the problem, Misek claims that he's heard that something's up at Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. (better known as Foxconn). The world's largest manufacturer of electronics and computer components, Foxconn is the source of the iPhone, the iPod, the Mac mini, and now the iPad. Misek says his sources tell him the problem will mean no more than 300,000 iPads will be available by the end of March, which is far below Apple's estimate of a million iPads ready to ship this month. He also indicated that the launch date will be pushed back into April, and that the device will likely only be available in the US to begin with.
Saying that he thinks "that the only material impact from the iPad delay could come in the form of frustrated consumers and some modest loss of lustre for the company’s product launch,” Misek says he still thinks Apple will sell 550,000 iPads by June, 1.2 million in the 2010 and 3.5 million in 2011.
This could be the reason what the iPad didn't go on sale last week as we had hoped, but there's no real way of knowing that yet...
According to a report in AppleInsider this morning, Apple is getting ready to add HDMI output to the next model of the Mac mini. Currently, the small-form-factor Mac has only a DVI video port: only the Apple TV box currently supports HDMI video output. Apple has also, according to this article, developed its own custom Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter for older Macs that will enable them to connect to HDTVs with one cable.
The computer industry is increasingly moving to direct HDMI audio/video output, rather than the older DVI standard: all Intel motherboard chipsets newer than the 945G Express have supported HD video plus 8-channel (7.1) sound over HDMI, as have NVIDIA’s GeForce 8200 and 8300 chipsets. DVI video is basically compatible with HDMI, but the dual-link DVI implementation on Mac mini - as well as most PCs - doesn't have audio data on the high-speed serial channel. While DVI to HDMI dongles exist - as well as ones that convert the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, there's no current way of transmitting audio and video through a single cable.
The new Mac mini prototype that is reportedly being tested is said to have an HDMI port where the DVI connector is located on the current model. This computer, according to AppleInsider's sources, uses the NVIDIA MCP89 chipset, which is the new model of the MCP79 used in most Macs that have Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Given that Intel sued NVIDIA to prevent it from shipping MCP89 chipsets compatible with Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, the new Mac mini is believed to be based on a Core 2 Duo platform.
Along with this upgrade, Apple is also said to be working on its own Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter which would let Mini DisplayPort-enabled MacBooks, iMacs, minis, and Mac Pros send HD video and audo over a single cable. This adapter was apparently intended to be included with new 27-inch iMacs, along with Blu-Ray support. However, when Apple reportedly balked at high licensing fees for Blu-Ray technology, the HDMI adapter was pulled as well. AppleInsider speculates that this adapter may become available at some point, but this is less clear.
DO NOT UPDATE TO FIRMWARE 3.1.3 IF YOU ARE JAILBROKEN! It is not safe yet to do so if you want to remained jailbroken and unlocked. This advice comes straight from the DevTeam via http://twitter.com/iphone_dev/status/8552734357Twitter.If you accidentally upgraded i got bad news for you...you can no longer restore to 3.1.2 unless you have your SHSH on file in cydia.
While we all like updates, this one is really nothing special and doesn't make it worthy of losing jailbreak just for it. The update includes a fix for the iPhone 3GS battery level reporting, a fix for app that crashed on launch and a fix for app crashes while using Japanese Kana Keyboard.
Additional security fixes are included in this update, and can be read in more detail here: About the security content of iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPod touch
Official confirmation that Apple will be announcing a new product on January 27 has finally come: Engadget reports that Apple has begun sending out invitations for 10:00 in the morning at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Although there is no information as to what the event will be for, expectations are pretty much universal that Apple will announce its new tablet a week from Wednesday, and that it will begin shipping in a few months.
It had been revealed last month that Apple had reserved the downtown arts center for several days next week. Initial speculation was that the announcement would be made on January 26, but The Wall Street Journal's Jon Paczkowski said at the beginning of this month that his sources said that the date had been fixed as January 27, a week from Wednesday. Apple had often made new product announcements on Tuesdays, but broke that mold last year when it scheduled the "It's Only Rock'n'Roll" event on Wednesday, September 9.
Last month, the Silicon Valley Insider's business page shared reports that developers had been asked to provide larger-sized demos of their apps for a 10-inch tablet screen. The French site Mac4Ever reported that the new iPhone SDK included a sort of "simulator" enabling devs to easily port their apps from the iPhone's screen to a larger screen. Also expected at this even is the announcement of iPhone OS 4.0, which will be the operating system used on the new device.
Most sources predict that the tablet will begin shipping in March.
